MAY PROGRAMS
The Archaeology of Captivity and Freedom
in Early New York
Thursday, May 22nd 7pm
Join Sea Cliff’s own Christopher N. Matthews, Executive Director of the Center for Public Archaeology at Hofstra University to hear about the archaeological record of early New York. Thousands of men, women, and children have passed through New York with virtually no other form of documentation, yet whose productive labor sustained the society. This presentation explains how archaeologists interpret those undocumented persons and ways of life. Among the most significant archaeological discoveries in New York is the African Burial Ground, where enslaved Africans were interred in the 18th century. These burial practices gives us a glimpse into forgotten lives and rich cultural practices of Africans and their descendents in America. |
